What is an NRI?
Non-resident Indian. Who is a non-resident Indian?
Is it only someone who is a Citizen of India residing outside of India? Or can it also be any person of Indian origin who still maintains an Indian identity either on paper or in practice?
After this website started, there were mixed responses. There were some who readily accepted the site and immediately related to it while others shot back by saying 'But I am not an NRI, I am a Local."
Ofcourse, you are a Singaporean, or British, or American or of any other nationality of the country you are a citizen of. However, the Indian here (in the case of this magazine) refers not so much to nationality but to an identity, descent, origins, ancestory, roots and race. Its goes much deeper.
If you hold an Indian Passport and live outside India, no doubt, you are an NRI. If you hold a Singapore passport, have Indian printed on your Identity Card, fill up Indian under the 'Race' portions of forms or speak an Indian dialect as your mother toungue, are a product of a mixed marriage where atleast one parent is an Indian, than I ask you this, are you an Indian? If so, than are you an NRI?
Lets Discuss. |
